Why does voting matter?

Life in the United States is getting harder, including in East Cleveland. Prices are high. There aren’t enough jobs and paychecks are small. Many people are worried about their rights in our country. These rights are guaranteed to us in the United States Constitution. They include the right to be treated fairly by police and judges, the right to talk about our ideas and opinions without being punished, the right to make health choices for our bodies, the right to learn true history, and the right to be told facts from people who report what’s happening in our city, country, and world.

We only get to keep our rights when we protect them. Voting is one of the most important ways to do that.

East Cleveland is a proud city, but most people here do not vote. When people do not vote, others make decisions for them and about them. Laws and rules known as policies can change fast. The life we are used to will disappear if we do not use the power of our voices to protect it.

White text on a dark blue background reads: Voting helps protect jobs, schools, safety, health care, our freedom to speak, and all of our rights.

The November 3, 2026 Midterm Election in the United States is very important. It will help decide what happens in East Cleveland, in Ohio, in the United States, and even in the whole world. This is because each of us is a part of the world community. What we do where we are right now makes a difference everywhere.

Everyone 18 and over should vote in the Midterm Election on November 3, 2026 and help others vote too. You can help even if you are not 18 yet.

Anyone can join the League of Women Voters. It’s not just for women. In our city, we have the League of Women Voters of Greater Cleveland—East Cleveland Chapter. Members teach residents about voting, help them register to vote, and help people get to their voting locations on election day.

When we learn about voting, help neighbors register, and show up to vote, we protect ourselves and make our voices heard.

This is the first page of the paper written in 1787 that grew to become the United States Constitution—the laws of our country. The first paragraph, which begins, “We the People,” is called the Preamble to the United States Constitution.
