This is amazing, thank you! Even assuming the best of intentions on the part of elected officials, there are only so many hours in a week. Like any of us, they must plan their attention, outreach and services based on where/who they believe will have the biggest impact. If one part of their service area repeatedly does not vote, it’s natural that they spend less time there, because focusing on voters will give them the biggest return for their efforts. And what about those that do not have the best intentions? Not voting just gives them cover not to serve you. Don’t let that happen. Vote!
I watch alternative media and, based on my conversations with many people and on what the journalists I follow say (Joy Reid, Wajahat Ali, and others), most people don’t know that we’ve lost our country. And by the time they realize what’s happened, it will be too late. A friend of mine’s grandmother experienced the Holocaust. She says what we’re experiencing is just like that. Many people around the world who have experienced their countries being taken over by despots are saying the same thing. The entire world is afraid of what’s happening here because of the power we have and that our mad president and his puppeteers are weilding.
So I’m doing this presentation. I have to do something.
It was a low turnout. But one of the members of the East Cleveland Chapter League of Women Viters — of which I am not a member — attended to help register students. I wound up giving an abbreviated version of my presentation to freshmen who engaged with it.
I AM VERY GRATEFUL that Shaw High School’s new principal Sulaiman Akbar is allowing me to redo the presentation, but at the school this time. Students will be selected by age to attend by school counselor Lamia Sherman.
This is all possible because Superintendent Dr. Henry Pettigrew met with me, the EC LWV member I mentioned, and school board president and former EC LWV president Dr. Mary Rice and agreed to let me do the presentation with students I am very grateful to all of the people I mentioned.
Doing the event at the library turned out to be a dress rehearsal. With an audience of students, I was able to see ways I can improve the presentation. So it’s all good.
